La Comuna 13

                Originally one of the most dangerous and violent neighborhoods in Medellín, La Comuna 13 is a small urban city on the mountainside above the San Javier metro station. After an impressive transformation, the Comuna is now considered safe to visit. One of the focal points of this city is the large outdoor escalators, named the escaleras electricas. These escalators allow access to neighborhoods previously isolated from the main town. The area surrounding the six sets of escalators is covered in murals and graffiti, and tours dedicated to the artwork itself are offered near the metro station. Getting a local guide to truly understand the violent and difficult history of the Comuna is also recommended.
